WHY OBTAIN IAER CERTIFICATION?

The Benefits of being a “Certified Electronics Recycler®”

·        Market Pull

o       There is increasing interest in the certification of electronics recyclers from the industry and government sectors – especially OEMs and the EPA.

o       IAER Certification is recognized as the first and only certification process designed exclusively to conduct third party audits of electronics recycling facilities.

·        Industry Interest

o       More electronics recyclers are interested in achieving certification. IAER certifications have increased significantly this year.

o       Industry leaders are obtaining IAER Certification and the designation of “Certified Electronics Recycler®”.

o       More than a dozen facilities have already achieved IAER Certification - and many more are currently planning to seek IAER Certification.

·        IAER Certification Program – Release 2.0

o       The IAER recently released a revised, enhanced and cost effective process for the certification of electronics recyclers after a year-long effort of revising all of the documents and procedures involved in the IAER certification process.

o       Part of the revisions was to expand and strengthen requirements in areas that have gained increasing interest, such as downstream controls, data security and hazardous materials.

·        Lower Cost

o       To roll out the new and enhanced IAER Certification Process – Release 2.0 and stimulate certification activity, the IAER is offering a special promotional opportunity to IAER Members who go through the certification process between the announcement (May 8) and year-end 2006.

o       The fee for certification during this special promotion will be approximately half the original cost of IAER certification.

o       For those companies with multiple facilities, the IAER together with BVQI established a new cost efficient approach to certification. If the company has a centralized management system that controls a common approach to the key management processes, then the company can be certified by a sampling technique (similar to ISO). As a result, the cost for certifying multiple facilities will be substantially less than individual site-by-site audits.

·        Credibility

o       The IAER Certification program has gained recognition as a comprehensive process for identifying electronics recyclers with good business practices - and is referenced as a consideration in selecting suppliers to a number of industry and government organizations.

o       Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) provides certification services for the IAER. BVQI is a world leader in registration to international quality and environmental standards – and recognized as the world’s most accredited Registra.

·        Marketing Advantage

o       IAER Certification is the only program that can designate a company as a “Certified Electronics Recycler®

o       The IAER provides a Certification certificate and plaque.

o       The IAER will also update the Member database, certification webpage, and include a notice in the monthly IAER Newsletter for each company and facility achieving the designation “Certified Electronics Recycler®”.

3.      Certification improves the Corporate Image.

4.      Certification gives legitimacy to the internal processes used by the company.

5.      Certification gives our customer’s confidence that we do things the proper way.

6.      Certification gives the company a marketing advantage because it verifies our creditability.”

James Gardner, Metech International

“The certification program is industry specific and includes aspects of ISO 9001 (the quality standard) and 14001 (the environmental standard), as well as industry focused areas such as data security, plant security, and downstream material controls.

Metech initially approached both ISO and IAER certification as a tool to better market us to potential customers. In actuality the primary impact has been to make us a more effective company through the review and documentation of our operating and environmental procedures, the formalization of audits of both suppliers and downstream vendors, and a non-conformance report system that documents internal deficiencies and customer complaints and track their resolution.

Existing customers have benefited through documented tracking and improved communications, which has increased their confidence in us. This has helped us to retain and increase our business level with them. For potential customers, the documentation associated with the certification program has made their audits easier and demonstrated to them that we are a company under control. A result is that we are seeing increased recognition of the IAER Certification program on the part of electronics related companies.”
