IAER WORKSHOP FOCUS GROUPS

SUMMARY REPORTS

Plastics

  • Input from multiple stakeholders in group
  • Discussed:
    1. Sourcing
    2. Processing
    3. Markets
  • Most emphasis on sourcing
  • Discussion on Basel potential export restrictions
  • Recommendation from TEAM
  • IAER should survey electronics recyclers and link with GRI Stakeholders Dialogue

Proposed IAER Survey

  1. How much volume (weight) of electronics do you get?
  2. How much do you export?
  3. How much of non-export is dismantled?
  4. What do you do with the plastics collected during dismantling?
  5. How much does the plastic weigh?
  6. Do you need to know what types of plastic you are handling?

CRTs/Glass

Conclusion

  • Since there are only 4 manufacturers of CRT glass in the USA, it is important that the electronics recycling industry know the capacity available for the use of recycled CRT glass.

Data needed:

  • Sales volume history (15 years) of CRT Glass Industry
  • What volumes of recycled CRT Glass can the industry handle if:
  • Sorted to leaded of non-leaded (panel)
  • Sorted to compositions of panel glass (what would volume increase to?)

Infrastructure

Needs:

  • No capital without markets
  • Tax credits for investments
  • Environmental derivatives
  • Uniformity in regulations
  • Transportation study
  • Market development for outputs
  • Customer survey
  • Product stewardship from OEMs
  • Government/industry partnerships

Reuse

Needs & Recommendations

  • Industry standards and classifications
  • Warrantees and liabilities
  • Industry data
  • Cross reference/bill of materials
  • Sharing

Next Step: convene OEMs and propose the issue/desire

  • Market Value
  • Cost IN
  • Recovery OUT
  • Turnover rate
  • "Blue Book" for parts

Next Step: Engage with other liquidation and asset recovery organization

  • Engage auto industry for advice/counsel
