ELECTRONICS and the ENVIRONMENT

RECYCLING SUMMIT

May 10-11, 2000 - San Francisco, CA

Summary Report

The SUMMIT event was a great success - by all measures!

Thanks to the leadership and hard work of the individuals and organizations that presented the SUMMIT, and the broad base of attendees from all sectors, both the ISEE Conference and the SUMMIT events exceeded expectations - not only in terms of attendance, but more importantly by the interaction, collaboration, and actions that resulted. This landmark event will set the tone and direction for the future of the electronics recycling industry.

Following is a brief summary of the SUMMIT:

  • ISEE Conference - In addition to experiencing the largest attendance in the history of the International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment, the sessions on Wednesday, May 10 focused primarily on topics of interest to electronics recycling.
  • Exhibits - The exhibit program provided a "bridge" between the ISEE Conference and the SUMMIT events. Most of the exhibits were related to electronics recycling and the traffic on the floor was very busy both days.
  • IAER Workshop - This was a full session with participants from all sectors. Overview presentations and breakout sessions were conducted on each of four initial focus areas for the development of a roadmap for the electronics recycling industry. In each case, practical, priority actions were identified for the industry to address. Watch this web site for a complete report and follow-up plans.
  • SUMMIT Meeting - Representatives from leading organizations and programs involved in electronics recycling presented an overview of their activities and plans. This well attended session provided a basis for mutual awareness and understanding of what is currently going on, as well as a framework for collaboration between organizations.
  • Banquet - This well attended event featured two outstanding industry speakers who focused on the challenges of electronics recycling and product stewardship as well as the opportunities for venture capital in this high tech sector. During the event, Diana Bendz of IBM received the first IAER Outstanding Contribution Award to recognize her leadership in the electronics recycling industry as well as in creating the SUMMIT.
  • Collaboration Meeting - As a follow-up to the SUMMIT Meeting, the previous day, representatives from interested organizations met to discuss how they might work together to foster collaborative efforts and programs in support of electronics recycling. A number of specific action items were identified. Watch this web site for a complete report and follow-up plans.
  • Industry Meetings - Several participating organizations held business meetings in conjunction with the SUMMIT, including the IAER, EIA and the DEER2 Project. All were well attended and productive.
  • Tours - Full busloads of SUMMIT attendees toured two leading recyclers in the area - Fox Electronics and MBA Polymers. This provided a unique opportunity to see some of the newest and most advanced processes and facilities in the electronics recycling industry. Thanks to both companies for their outstanding showing.

The SUMMIT was not a one-time event. It was the beginning of a process to build an effective and efficient infrastructure for electronics recycling.
