ELECTRONICS RECYCLING SUMMITâ - 2002

The Electronics Recycling SUMMIT® was held in conjunction with the International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (ISEE) on May 6-9 in San Francisco, CA. The event was a great success with one of the largest turnouts in the 10 year history of the ISEE and the 3 year history of the SUMMIT. The Program included a major conference of technical papers as well as tutorials, roundtables, special sessions, guest speakers, exhibits and a tour. This year's Electronics Recycling SUMMIT was expanded to a mini-conference of its own, including Special Sessions and Breakout groups in addition to the Focus Team and Organization Reports.

The objectives of the program for SUMMIT 2002 included:

·        Reports of progress in key areas identified for focus last year

·        Continue the interaction and infrastructure growth among all sectors

·        Set the course for future actions

·        Focus on a timely topic:  Export Issues

FOCUS AREAS

Focus Teams reported on each of the 4 areas identified as priorities for developing an efficient and effective infrastructure for electronics recycling. This year the reports were followed by Roundtable breakout sessions where attendees interacted with the Focus Team leaders to develop observations and recommendations for future actions. During the SUMMIT there was also a meeting held among many of the organizations involved in electronics recycling to explore opportunities for collaboration. The objective of this meeting was to determine the best way to ensure future collaboration as well as the course of future SUMMIT meetings. Areas of common interest and need were identified and recommendations developed for approaches to collaborative efforts.

EXPORT ISSUE

A Special Session was held in conjunction with the SUMMIT to address a topic of current interest and controversy. In response to a recently released report on issues and exposures to exporting electronics scrap to the Far East, a panel was assembled to present and discuss viewpoints on the subject. CONCLUSION

Progress continues to be made in the development of an effective and efficient infrastructure for electronics recycling. Many organizations are involved from the industry, government and not-for-profit sectors, each with projects and programs intended to contribute to the goal. In addition to sharing information, the SUMMIT provided an opportunity for these organizations to explore the possibilities for working together. During a Collaboration Meeting held in conjunction with the SUMMIT event, ten organizations agreed to formalize their cooperation to facilitate joint efforts in areas of common interest. The Electronics Recycling SUMMIT has evolved to a process as well as a series of events to serve needs of end-of-life electronics.
